Description of the local community

The Association for Children and Women Community is located in a rural environment. Situated in a quite, peaceful and Green area, it is ideal for People with Disability, Students and Children to stay, study and practice academic subjects. January to May is summer season when the temperatures can get quite high. Rainy season is June to August and cold season is September to October. We try to develop the projects with the least disturbance to the environment. Languages spoken within ACW are mainly Kannada, English and Hindi with Kannada being the local language. The economical environment is quite typical of rural India. ACW Community is situated about 365 km from BANGALORE, on National highway NH 206. From Sagar city to ACW it’s less then 10 KM. The land is part of a Forest area in Shimoga Dist. And is close to the main road where there is a regular bus service to and from the main cities. Also, the world famous Jog falls is nearby the village. Many Student groups from other institutions are interested in our work. We often get visitors from different places in Karnataka who will come and spend time with us. Everyone are always warmly welcome.

Motivation to cooperate with volunteers

we believe that our children benefit greatly from contact with volunteers who come from many different parts of India. The contact with volunteers brings with them a wide variety of skills to impact the children in many good ways. This gives the children of our project an edge. The latest experience with volunteers was in 2004 when two volunteers from Norway stayed with us for two weeks. Also, some MSW students came to study Community work. Once in every three months some of our friends and youth association members come from Bangalore and around Karnataka to spend time, help in our work, Workshops, Training and Summer Programmers. Our volunteers work alongside our members of staff so when a volunteer leaves there is never an empty gap. We feel that both our members of staff and foreign volunteers contribute in different ways to the project and help us to realise our goals and tackle any problems which we face.

Benefits for the project and the community

One of the main benefits from the interaction of volunteers is the exchanges of different ideas and points of views. Children are grateful to interact with volunteers. It gives them confidence, broadens their minds and gives them direct experience with other cultures.
